There have been many myths that have circulated among the general public regarding plastic surgery. Many of them are not based in any sort of reality. Let’s take a look at some of the plastic surgery myths that have been debunked:

1. Plastic surgery is a luxury that only the wealthy can afford

This all depends on how you look at it. If an average person wants to get a new procedure done every month, then it may be out of their price range. However, if an average person sets their sights on a specific procedure, it is certainly possible for a person to save enough money to have plastic surgery performed. Breast implants have been one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures for many years. It is certainly not only Hollywood starlets who are having their breasts augmented.

2. Plastic surgery is unsafe

This is simply not true. The media has contributed to this myth by sensationalizing several instances where a plastic surgery procedure has gone wrong. The simple fact is that complications from plastic surgery are so rare that when they do happen, they are newsworthy. Many people also worry about complications resulting from the use of anesthesia, but these types of problems are just as rare as plastic surgery complications. Every type of surgery has some risk to it, but plastic surgery risks are minimal.

3. All plastic surgeons are the same

The training received by plastic surgeons varies widely. If a surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, this means the surgeon is trained in all areas of the body. However, surgeons certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology are only trained to operate on the neck and head. There are also surgeons just looking to make a quick buck, so a person should always get references.

4. Breast implants may cause breast cancer

The Institute of Medicine has conducted studies that have proven that there is no connection between breast cancer and breast implants. However, women with implants should still get mammograms.

5. Liposuction is a good weight loss method

Many people think they can skip exercise and rely on liposuction to lose weight. It is true that liposuction removes fat cells from the body. However, its main purpose it to remove fat from specific areas that are trouble spots. The reality is that liposuction will only remove around a dozen pounds at the most. It must be used in tandem with regular exercise to see maximum results.
