Let’s face it; the hustle and bustle of everyday life is too much to be able to have a home-cooked meal three times a day, seven days a week. It takes a lot of planning and prep time to have something healthy that you can be satisfied with. Not only do you have to buy ingredients and cook them from scratch but you also have to follow your nutritional requirements.

Eating out isn’t really a viable option either as it can really stack up costs. This balancing act of making sure your meals are healthy, inexpensive, and quick to make is something that can leave many disheartened.

Thankfully, all hope is not lost. You can find some excellent microwave recipes that are healthy, quick, and don’t put a burden on your budget. Not only will these recipes give you an added sense of ease but will prove that your microwave can do a lot more than reheat last night’s leftovers.

Is eating out of a microwave healthy?

By now, most of you are wondering whether or not eating out of a microwave is really a good idea. The truth is, we’ve always associated microwaves with cheap over the counter ready meals and greasy leftovers. However, there’s definitely more you can do with them than that. The real question isn’t whether or not microwaves are healthy to eat out of but rather what kind of food are you using them to prepare.

For the most part, there aren’t any major health differences between using a standard stove or a microwave. You can use them for a wide variety of healthy lunches and desserts just as you would on a stove or oven. So, as long as you’re eating the right kind of food, a microwave is perfectly healthy.

Lunch Ideas for Microwaves

Lunches are one of the best ways to utilize your microwave. If you’re like everyone else, lunch time is usually a very short part of the day where you get to take a break from work. Naturally, a lot of people prefer to have short simple lunches that can be prepared and consumed quickly. This is one of the areas where your microwave can truly shine. You can prepare a number of things out of your microwave for lunch using fresh ingredients which will give you a healthy and delicious lunch. Here are some basic ideas to get you started.

Mug Soup

This is a very simple recipe with very little prep needed. All you need are a few chopped vegetables, an egg, water, a microwave, and 5-7 minutes. Seems easy, right?

To make this recipe, you need to chop any 4-5 of your favorite vegetables and place them in a mug. Add enough water on top to cover the vegetables. Microwave the mug for about 3-4 minutes before adding an egg in and microwaving again for another 1-2 minutes. This results in a delicious soup that has a healthy dose of fiber from the vegetables and protein from the egg.

Microwave Omelet

Who doesn’t love an omelet? And you’ll love it, even more, when you realize it can be made in 2 minutes or less using a microwave. To make a microwave omelet, simply whisk eggs in a bowl and add your favorite garnishing and seasoning. Put the bowl in the microwave for a minute before flipping it over and repeating the process for the other side.  And voila, your omelet is ready.

Mac n Cheese

This is one of the staples of easy to make meals and can easily replace the unhealthy boxed mac n cheese you buy at supermarkets. For this recipe, you will need elbow macaroni, shredded cheddar cheese, and some water.

Start by adding about 1/3 cup of macaroni in a mug along with 1/4 cup of water, microwaving it for about 6-7 minutes. Make sure to regularly take the mug out and stir until done. Without removing the pasta water, add 1/3 cup of shredded cheese on top and microwave again for 30-40 seconds until the cheese melts. Serve and enjoy.

Healthy Dessert Ideas

Making healthy food with your microwave isn’t only limited to savory recipes. You can also indulge in your sweet tooth by making some healthy desserts that are low on calories but high on flavor. Here are some basic dessert ideas to get your mouth watering.

Chocolate Chip Cookie

Three minutes and a microwave is all that’s needed to make a delicious chocolate chip cookie. The ingredients you will need are 4 tbsp of flour, 1 tbsp of butter, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tbsp granulated sugar, 1 tbsp whisked egg, 1 tbsp chocolate chips, and vanilla extract.

Start the recipe by adding butter to a mug and microwaving for 40 seconds until fully melted. Add the remaining ingredients except for the chocolate chips. Mix the ingredients until you reach a dough like consistency and the chocolate chips, stirring them in well. Place the mug in the microwave and let it cook for about a minute. Once done, remove the mug and let it cool for a while before serving.

Strawberry Cobbler

A classic fruity dessert that can be made in your microwave in under 5 minutes, what else could you ask for? This recipe will need the following ingredients 1/3 cup of flour, 1 tbsp butter, 2 tbsp milk 1 tbsp white sugar, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, and 3/4 cup strawberries.

Cut your strawberries into fine pieces and add them to a mug along with powdered sugar. Combine the flour, milk, sugar, and baking powder in a separate bowl. Add butter to this mixture and stir well until it becomes dough like. Add this dough into the mug containing the strawberries, making sure that the dough evenly surrounds the berries on all sides. Microwave this mixture on the high setting for about 90 to 120 seconds until the dough is cooked. Remove from microwave, allow it to cool and serve.
